How do I choose durable furniture having animals??

I also have 3 cats and a dog. I keep the cats from scratching by having a scratching post in each room. I keep them from peeing by laying aluminum foil where they want to go - it scares them away. As for my dog---- she's fully trained, so I make sure she goes outside frequently. She does like to sleep on the sofa, so I keep a bed sheet on it for her so it stays clean. The key is to monitor your pets until they are trained properly. Whenever the cats get lazy and leave a mess (it happens sometimes!) I put all 3 of them in a room with the litter box and food and leave them there for a few days. They get the message - but sometimes they do make a mistake!

Choose durable fabrics. Pretty and dainty do not mix with pets. Choose tightly woven fabrics with weight to them, denim, twill, tapestry, corduroy. And if you can, get slipcovers. Have at least 2, so one is on the sofa, one in the wash or ready to go on at any moment. If you can afford a third, go for it.

I have 6 cats, 3 dogs, 3 neighbor dogs, (visiting dogs), a canary and a dragon. My furniture sees a lot of action every day and all covered in old sheets or throws.

At one time I had a beautiful sparkling white duvet cover and pillows on my bed . . .no more, always covered in some sort of sheet, blanket or throw.

Slipcovers can help. Make sure they're good quality because you'll be washing them a lot! Make sure your dog is kept brushed, that will cut down on the hair. As already said, supply scratching posts and keep your litter boxes really clean. Hope this helps a little. Good luck.

Teach your pets not to go on the furniture! A sure way to do that is to sprinkle cayenne powder on the cushions for a few weeks. They quickly learn not to jump up there.

Almost any fabric is likely to be victimized by claws. I've had better success with leather than denim or twill.

Don't waste your money on more expensive types of leather if you own pets. It will get scratched or worse. You can wipe legs of furniture with rue, which keeps animals away.
