It the fabric you are using velvet, or velveteen?

Although both fabrics have a nap, if the former, then you will require a specialized presser feet for your sewing machine, to avoid the nap on the velvet getting permanently crushed while been sewn.

I would recommend using a roller foot, shown here:

The part with the nap you could feel smooth side down

Usually the smooth side but totally up to you
