My mother found this beautiful four drawer dresser in a thrift store for less than $100. I wasn't crazy about the finish, and decided to have a go at stain. It took only one coat of the Cabot oil based wood stain (shade Kona) and some scrubbing of the glass knobs. The dresser is my favorite piece in the whole house.
Next, I tried the same tactic on a hand me down bookshelf that my great aunt gave to me. It was made of pressed wood, a number of years ago. There was a finish on the bookshelf, but the stain took to it beautifully. Both items look worth far more than I paid, and are certainly better quality than anything I could purchase as a similar item for online.
