Are you asking how to hang a lamp or what style to choose?
I created a DIY hanging lamp a couple weeks ago. I will be posting the entire project on my DIY & decorating blog in a few weeks, so be sure to check it out here: Simple Decorating Tips. In the mean time, what I basically did is found an old barn pulley, and ordered hanging lamp parts and put it all together. (I will have the links for all the parts on the post, as well as a macrame lesson, because I covered the plain lamp cords that hang through the pulley with macramed jute)

It depends upon the "look" you are trying to achieve. farmhouse, modern or? But basically, all you need is a light fixture that the light bulb screws into, a long electrical cord that you've threaded through a chain, and a shade of some sort to go over the light fixture along with a hook or two to hook the chain to the ceiling.
I'm doing something similar using a copper colander (as a shade) over my kitchen sink.
