How can I get more kitchen light in a rental?

My kids have just rented a house with a huge kitchen and only one small overhead light. I need some ideas to give them more light on a very small budget and without doing a whole lot to the rental.

  • Many moons ago I lived in a rental like that. I used floor and table lamps. It was eclectic looking, but, hey, it worked!

When we were in rentals, we would put up a better light that fit in the same size base. We would put away the original light and put it back up before we moved out. If need be, you could put up a light and run the cord along the wall to a plug in to put in another light. Perhaps hang it from a hook in the ceiling and they would only have to repair a small hole when they move out..

We own rental properties and I wouldn't mind if a tenant asked us to purchase and put up a different light. If they put up a different light on their own and it's the wrong size or something it could cause a fire. I would much rather as a landlord purchase the appropriate sized light and have it installed properly than have a tenant do it without permission.

What about adding undercabinet lighting? There are some simple ones, like Ikea, that they could take with them.

Make sure you get permission from the landlord in WRITING. I state that to my tenants. I have also sued tenants for damage to property above and beyond the security deposit.

Lamps! String lights also are an easy and pretty way to add lighting.
