How can I add lighting without calling an electrician?

Get one of those rolls of strip LED lights for under the cabinets on Amazon and it will be bright. First, try some new bulbs in your existing fixtures. There are many in the stores that provide a LOT more light (Lumens) than in years past. That will help. We did this in my mother-in-law's kitchen and the difference is amazing. Once you've established where you need even more light (a certain area of the countertop, the sink, etc.,) then find your outlets and search for products - like those mentioned above - or even clip on or standing lights that will work and are easy to install. (remember, clip on lights can be attached to tops and bottoms of most cabinetry) For any rewiring, if you don't know some handy-person who knows what they're doing, an electrician is pretty much required.

Replace what you have with LED bulbs in the color Daylight. After that they will see you from space!

You could use those stick anywhere battery lights, but if you really have a problem with electrics, DON'T do it yourself. It could kill you!

Even your stove hood can have higher wattage LED lights.

The nice thing about LED’s is that they don’t put off heat like incandescents do. Which means you can increase the wattage beyond what the fixture might say on it.

LEDs can be bought in whatever “color range” you want and they’re labeled as to what Degrees Kelvin they are. So the shopping is easy.

Also when your changing the bulbs, wash any globes or diffusers with warm soapy water as kitchens are notorious for grease vapors landing on everything.

There are a lot of helpful tips on YouTube that will help you wire your entire kitchen to be able to snag all the parts. Don't forget the light bulbs, only use energy-saving bulbs because they are more economical and don't require much electricity. It's also important to place all the wires so that they don't get in anyone's way and no one accidentally snags them with their foot, hand, or pot. The new LED "Puck" or "Tap" lights are great to place beneath the upper cabinets or on certain areas in your kitchen to lighten the areas you want to have more light. The batteries last a long time in them as well so they're not quite as convenient as having an electrified light, but saves the cost of an install. They can be added using the heavy double stick tape or with velcro.
