Can you post a photo?
You can turn the firplace into more of a decorative purposes and not have to worry about the flammability of it, because its not in use! And, for the carpets you can cover them with mats or rugs that you like better.
Put candles, real or faux, in firebox. If you like, get cut a piece of thin stainless sheeting at HD to put across back of firebox to reflect the light better and give it cleaner look. Beautiful birch logs brighten things up too, or a shallow basket of pine cones if you enjoy the smell.
I don't know what colors you have, but I'd buy some wonderful colored-print pillows with just a bit of brown in them to distract. Folks will smile at your pillows rather than notice the flooring. Or, as mentioned above, some area rugs. With complementary pillows to pull the eyes up.
I believe in going with the cheapest option first, preferably returnable so I can experiment.
Perhaps take up all carpeting and see if wood-flooring is under. Maybe cleanup the flooring, or have sanded over and stained if in the budget. And maybe if the fireplace opening is large enough, put a fake looking burning fireplace that just blows in extra warm air. I have one that looks kind of neat, with only warm air comes out the bottom, but it looks like flames are really burning. I bought it on QVC a few years back. You can even turn the warm air off and just have the fake flames on. I love mine, for around $100.00. Hope this may help! Good luck.
