I have a small 14 by 14 family room with fireplace on one wall?

Buy Small Non Bulky furniture for a small room. If you want to make a purchase, first decide what you are prepared to to let go to be able to accommodate it! Maybe folding dining furniture would help.

The large flat screen tv and the fireplace are the focal points in the room and the 2 cabinets to the side of the fireplace is competing against it, along with the different woods from other furniture. That wall is just too busy.

The room is also "furniture heavy". I would remove the dark office chair from in front of the window along with the 2 tall cabinets by the fireplace.

Then remove the bulky chair and the wall table to see how it would look and what kind of flow you have. You mention it is open concept but I can't tell where it opens to or where there are any more doorways. All of that would make a difference in your shopping decision.

Once you choose your style and furniture design, keep in mind how much area in your room is going to be displaced by it. Take your measurements with you when you shop, Maybe even bring a picture.

Redcatcec made some good points regarding changes to your room. If you purchase a sectional you will be limited in your furniture placement ( I'm thinking pit style). You have some nice pieces just too much of it. Why is the trunk coffee table just floating in the middle of the room? I would consider painting the side cabinets white to match the mantel.

I would take out those cabinets and clear the room. buy two small scale midcentury sofas and flank the fireplace with them with a Coffee table between them. OR a small scale sofa where that big brown chair is with a sofa table behind the sofa to define the rooms.

Is the room used mostly for tv watching or entertaining/conversation. If it’s entertaining I wouldn’t get a sectional. It’s awkward for that. If it’s just tv and sectional will be ok. I’d draw your room out on graph paper and draw on the sectional your considering to make sure it’s not too big.

First, take out everything and do a serious reconsideration of whether or not you want it in the room. Paint the cabinets on the sides to match the mantle.

Rather than a sectional, consider 2 sofas. The cost is close to the same and you will have much more versatility. Even in a large area, sectionals are difficult.

Replace or paint the chest/coffee table.

Smaller furniture and less of it. The area should be easy to navigate.

I would not recommend a sectional for this room, but if you are set on it, you will need to get rid of a lot of the other pieces in your room. You may be able to set it partly on the wall where the table and chair is and then on to where the brown oversized chair is.

I would paint the cabinets flanking the fireplace white, and add a new rug. Try Wayfair they have some good deals. Put the sectional wherever it fits and remove the chairs. They seem to make it cluttered. Move the chest towards the sectional and use as a coffee table.

Hello. I agree with Kathy Gunter Laws wonderful suggestions. Additionally I would consider a lower height coffee table. The trunk looks out of place sticking out with his significant height in relation to your fire box.

Since the room is so small I would first take out the cabinets on the sides of the fireplace. I also think your room lacks color. I would buy a sofa and love seat. I would take out the coffee table from the middle of the room, and place it in front of the sofa. Instead of the chairs in front of the window I would put the love seat. Get a colorful rug and some colorful throw pillows.

It seems to me a lot of things don't really match or go together in the room. I would do what the others suggested, take everything else and find a sectional that fits in the space. I'd maybe even cut out some paper in the shape of the sectional you envision and move it around on the floor and see how it'd fit in the space for best placement before purchasing it.

No worries, size doesn’t matter! Just make sure you measure well and don’t forget to measure doorways in regards to furniture moving in and out. Take into account traffic patterns and how the room is used and you’ll then be able to find a sectional to fit your needs.

You do need to seriously consider what is modern enough to keep. The etagére cabinets next to the fireplace are not contemporary. I absolutely hate to see furniture quality wood painted. It would be better to use a white or gray gel stain. Better yet, is there another place or room you can put them? Uncovering the walls either side of the fireplace will do a lot to modernize.

I do not like sectionals. The corner pieces are uncomfortable, squeezing knees together and leaving the back unsupported. Sofa/chaise combinations are also a waste in a small space. Just get a recliner; they don't all look the same. Smaller furniture is easier to fit into a small space. Chairs do not have to match the sofa as long as they work with the overall style of the room. Swivel chairs are better for a TV room; they are easily turned for TV viewing or conversation.

The office chair definitely doesn't belong, and I can't tell if the table and chairs on the right is part of your dining table or a separate small set. Was your back to a wall when you took the photo are are you standing in a pathway? If it is a pathway, the table and chairs constrict movement.

The rug is too small for the room, and the trunk/coffee table is too far from seating to be useful. It looks like you have tried to create an interesting vignette on every flat surface, but that can quickly become visual clutter. Remove all this, then put back only 1 item on any surface.

I would put the smaller sized sectional to the left of where you were standing when you took the picture, you could probably fit a smaller chair to left of that, or two if they will fit, and keep the slender table for them, rectangle storage coffee table for the sectional, and 2 storage ottomans where the box is. You can get rid of the end table on the left and put a standing lamp behind the sectional. You could think about a smaller style nook where you table is for additional seating

Realistically, it's going to take a lot of money and a complete change in all furnishings to decorate this room in a mid-century modern decor.

I agree with others who have commented on the volume of items and the lack of harmony presently in the room.

How much do you actually use all the pieces of furniture?

If you are wanting to change the room, before you begin to purchase any new furniture, I would suggest that you first begin taking out and 'donating to a better home' all items that no longer serve a purpose or meet your needs.

For a sectional you need room on two walls with the corner. Without seeing the rest of the room, its hard to help you out

A sectional with hairpin type of legs would be nice. A new rug and maybe swapping out or painting the cabinets on the side of the fireplace
