At a minimum you should have two places to sit, a table of some sort (either a side table or coffee table) and some lighting. What pieces do you have to work with?

A large mirror helps to make a room look bigger, especially if it can hang opposite a window.

A designer (which I can't remember their name ) said that thinking of your room as a city landscape. Not everything has to be in level with each other. Mirrors as ranger mentioned is a good idea to have placed on the larger wall. A larger mirror on its own or go completely modern with long mirrors adjusted to your own decor. It's hard to tell what size your dealing with a photo would be helpful. Overall. Key to decorating a small living space is bright colours with accent tones going throughout the furnishings. Don't have furniture that sit directly on the floor, have sofa with skinny legs to create space, don't have furniture pushed up against the wall if possible. Hang curtains from the ceiling all the way down the to floor rather than just at window height. Create a focal point that eliminates the feeling of four walls, and creates a focal point. Some people have started painting their ceilings a lighter shade to the wall colour to create no limits. I don't know how this would work out as never tried it yet. Paint trims a gloss white. Don't force yourself to have a coffee table is there's no room, a basic side table gotten cheap at IKEA would do just fine. Have no clutter in the sitting room. Only keep what it meant to be there. In my sitting room I only have a few photos on the mantle piece, tv stand, tv, sofa, two arm chairs , a rug, a coffee table, and that's about it! I don't do reading in my sitting room and the days of DVDs are gone so no need to have them gather dust for you. :) post a photo so a better answer will help you more :) best of luck! X

A picture of the room and the measurements would be helpful. Otherwise, I agree with MN mom's post, adding that glass top tables will keep the room from looking too crowded.

Another good idea is to keep as much as possible off the floor; ie use shelving, wall art etc. If possible, make one wall a feature wall by either painting that wall and papering the others or vice versa. With a narrow but high bench or table and a few books, candles or flowers etc against the feature wall, that is all you could need. Keep your furniture simple (like bamboo or caneware) as it won't look bulky in a small room. If you paint the ceiling a light colour, start from a certain height at the top of the wall - say 18 inches of the top of all walls and the ceiling the one colour, that will make the room look bigger. A picture really would help. :)
