My entertainment center is is too tall can I make it shorter?

I can only fit a 32 inch TV in my entertainment center. So could I take the very top piece and bring it down to where the second shelf from the bottom is to where it would be approximately 3 ft tall? It has glass doors on the left hand side and of course those would have to be taken out. Do you have any suggestions? By the way the shelves are removable and adjustable.9

If you have someone that uses carpenter tools, the top can be taken off, side panels and middle panel cut-down to the shelf that is right above the tv. That will leave you with existing shelf and top that was taken off can be added right back on. Might need some type moulding to trim out top shelf add on to make it look finished.

Thank you for your suggestion. I've made some little adjustments I lowered the shelves on the left hand side and thought that I could remove the inside panel and bring the very top down to where the pink tab is that's on the Shelf. That way I would still have some a couple of shelves

I asume you want a bigger TV....Have someone with carpenter tools cut your entertainment center off even with the shelf your TV is on. Then take very top of your center and cut it off and put it under the TV....sides will have to be cut accordingy...molding can cover the sides where they meet. Better yet, could you sell this one and get a console to sit your TV on with storage below for your components?

You might be able to take off the doors, and then turn the unit on its side.

This unit appears to be assembled. My suggestions is to try taking off the section on the left (assuming you do not want it). Take off the top - above the tv, cut down the sides even with the bottom of the TV. These will probably have to be cut. Sand the rough edges and lightly sand the remainder of the unit. Suggest handles, paint and you will have a completely new unit.

Maybe turn it on it side, TV side up, Take out shelf existing above TV, Remove glass door, They may be a size to slide in so shelves are now glass on opposite side, ( Cut off legs if necessary, paint bottom which will now be a side, then hang a picture on the end or a simple wood magazine rack or basket for guides and clickers)

Turning it on its side would make it too long. This entertainment center is solid oak and it is very heavy. Taking out the inside panel removing the doors and bringing the top piece down to where the pink tab is I believe is the best way to go. Thanks for your suggestion anyway

If you turn it on its side, add some bun feet to raise it slightly off the floor. If you are handy, you could dismantle it and make it shorter or reconfigure the entire unit. Sand and paint, add some handles or knobs, maybe an embellishment. It would look totally different.

I would only take top shelf off and set Tv on top. You can the use left over wood and make 1 or 2 shelves where tv is currently.

This unit shows its genre. Why not buy a new one and sell this on Craigslist or eBay? IKEA and many other places have nice units for larger television/media devices. You could end up spending a couple of hundred dollars redoing what you have and still not be satisfied.

I like the storage with this one and its solid oak....not cheap particle board. It's very heavy. I can redo this one for less.

We had our handyman install a board across the top and bottom to mount the TV on. Yes it hangs over the opening ... but I can still keep the entertainment center and have a great place to put our large screen TV in.

Don't put it on its side, the design at the bottom would look weird on the side. Simply remove top shelves and place tv on top and remaining shelf can be useful for something else in your home.

I think by removing the inside panel and bringing the top shelf down to where the pink tab is on the shelf on the left hand side is the best way to go for height and Storage

  • SandyG SandyG on Jun 17, 2017

yes, you have several options there in shortening the height. With tv and accessories, it takes a lot of shelf/drawer space to hide it all.

I had a similar problem with our solid cherry entertainment ctr. I moved it into my sewing room/guest room and purchased a new larger one for our family room.

  • Norris720 Norris720 on Jun 18, 2017

Ritaccpa - It is possible if this will give you the room you need. First are you a D.I.Y.-er and have all the tools needed to complete the project. Second what is yo entertainment center made of, Solid wood , MDF, or Particle board. This is important to know how you will fasten boards to support the new shelve.

Remove the top shelves. Take a set of four C-clamps and some wood glue , glue the long board of the shelf you took apart to the top of ur entertainment center after it dries. Move ur tv to the top and place ur other appliances where ur tv was.
