Open concept layout options
I'm looking for other options for reworking my kitchen/living space. Are there any DIY design sites you could recommend that I could use to see if I can make this space more functional?

Place oval coffee table in centre of carpet!
Hi Kristen,
Different people use their living spaces for different purposes and activities.
To start determining how any space can be made more 'functional' one must first identify how you use the rooms now, what presently works for you in the floor plan, and what about the layout does not meet your needs.
I see a very large sofa, several entrances to the working kitchen triangle, and not very many walls. How many adults/children are living in this home? How often do you actually turn on the corner fireplace? Do you have adequate counter space? How frequently do you use the formal dining table or the counter seating?
If you could share a few more details, we would be better able to offer you realistic suggestions; rather than just general ideas that may not be applicable to your individual situation.

great ideas
I actually used an old picture from a previous owner because my living room now is temporarily a play room / storage / tv room, etc.. we have never ever ever used the fireplace so I'd love for it to be removed but that may not be an affordable solution. we use the counter seating and the table that seats 6 (but can squeeze 8 if necessary). I just don't think the kitchen is very functional. There is no room to get by dishwasher if someone is unloading it. The pantry is just shelves - not a walk-in. I feel like the island is too deep to be really functional - like it could have 1/3 of its size removed in depth and still be able to seat people and use the countertop for prepping, etc. Also, I don't like how the fridge just ends and there is nothing on the other side. Here is a picture of something I like that is more functional for a kitchen with seating.
Maybe you could try something like Houzz Pro for free? https://www.houzz.com/pro?lsd=google_software&lsmr=google_software&m_refid=olm_google_1729081659_99809476469_kwd-338196949657_432116146460_c_g_cat-manage_proposal&pos=&device=c&nw=g&matchtype=p&m_kw=app%20for%20interior%20design&source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_term=kwd-338196949657&gclid=CjwKCAjw4ayUBhA4EiwATWyBrqxkEWaQbJT4KC60rkiuj5gIHyAh269FYe5NygFTKtQpyGLvE_6rnRoCnsoQAvD_BwE
The sectional would seem to me to be the biggest obstacle of the space. I'm wondering what function you are looking for as well. Perhaps going with bench rather than chairs at the table.
In a few months, the living room will be completely bare and ready for new furnishings. I am just not a fan of open concept at all and I don't feel like the kitchen is functional.
Hi Kristen, here are a few apps that you can play with to design your kitchen. You could "plug in" that kitchen you show above (the one you like the design of), and see if you have enough room in your current kitchen to accomodate those changes.

Try to move that large beam colum I think it’s load bearing so you need to replace with main beam going across whole room .the get larger island with stools.
It isn't free, but there are virtual designers that will charge you a one time fee to help with design. You might get some really valuable insight from a pro. Also, if you're really not happy with the way the kitchen functions you could make an appointment with a Home Depot or Lowe's kitchen designer and they could walk you through a few options and show you how the entire space would function. That design service is free.
There are lots of ways to go about this but first you'll need to take note of how the space is being used currently and this could take a few days to a couple weeks to ascertain. Once you know that, you can determine how best to support or change it. You can ask for advice via sites like Havenly or Modsy or reach out to a local interior designer for more hands on help.
