I plan to paint living room, dining room, remove very old carpet, paint kitchen cabinets, and replace or paint old countertops?

I am on a very limited budget and would like to do as much as I can on my own.

I found a carpet that I love at Lowes and want to picks colors that would work with the carpet a 5 x7 rug. My rooms all connect.

Do I paint first? Then remove rugs? What room should I start with? I am overwhelmed

Thanks

I would remove rug then paint then replace with new rug. You don't want to paint and then ruin the paint job accidentally when you and removing the rug. Also all the dirt from the rug will have to be cleaned if it get on the baseboards and walls. Good luck.

i would paint before removing the carpet, then you don't have to be too particular about slopping on the floor. I would start with the living room, place all of the furniture in the dining room to give you a clear space to work, then move all to the living room once the painting is done and carpet in that area is removed. repeat with the dining room. Then work on the kitchen as it will create the most havoc and will likely take the longest to do.

1st remove rugs, pull nails /staples & fill any gouges, then Clean well. Carefully pry off floor trim, to replace or paint (mark on back of each piece with magic marker). Painting in living/dining rooms after that will be easy - still cover floors for protection. Kitchen Reno’s can be chaotic - do it last (use dining room as temp kitchen- tables as counters & storage & small appliances). Next, paint your cabinets - bases 1st, doors/drawers last (remove hinges/handles to replace or clean well). After that, replace counters. REMEMBER, save the sink cut out as a bread board under toaster or where most cutting activity occurs - it saves your new counters Getting scratched up. Allow time to do every job just right, so no pressure to “just get it done”. There are YOU TUBE videos for every job, so check them out too. It’s sooo rewarding at the end to say “I DID IT MYSELF”. Good Luck.

Paint before you remove rugs, then you won't need a drop cloth.

I am thinking about paint the floors instead of recapturing. I have to see what is infrastructure first.

The most time consuming part of remodeling is the prep work. If you go through each room first and prep each wall (fill and sand nail holes, restore any textured areas, prime any water marks, etc.) . If the carpet you are removing is wall to wall you will end up removing the baseboards, tack strip and staples underneath. If that's the case you will need to lay down drop cloths in those rooms. Remove light fixtures. Then you can tape off areas (like baseboards if not removed and around windows and doors). Use the green Duck painting tape (it leaves a clean edge). You can do this in all rooms you plan to paint over the course of a few days before you begin painting . Edge and paint the ceiling , corners, around door casings and windows and baseboards if they are still there. Remove the tape around the edges before the paint dries. The rest of the painting will go very quickly and within hours you can move furniture back into the rooms. Save the kitchen for last as that is much more disruptive. Best of luck and happy holidays!
