What can I do on my living room wall with old barnwood?

We were thinking about planing the wood, use a clear polymer to coat it and fill in the holes and use that as a backdrop for an open floor to ceiling shelving unit. It's an open floorplan and I need to paint the walls and thinking blues and greens (we love the ocean but don't want a full nautical theme). Doing this in steps as we don't have the money to complete it at one time. Do I start with the paint first?
