What to do with this living room?

I haven't moved in yet but just wanted to start collecting some ideas and was hoping somebody with a more artistic and stylish mind than me (it's not hard) and who isn't colourblind would have better ideas to do with this space?
So far I've only decided that the TV should be mounted on the black wall in the middle and perhaps a 3 piece sofa to enclose the middle of the room. And perhaps one of those seats below the window? Not sure what they've called. I think those are nice. I'd probably move the dining table somewhere else too.
Just for reference, the entrace door is in the far right of the picture and the doorway into the kitchen is behind (left) of where the picture was taken.
Any ideas would be nice.

I think you have great ideas already, though because of the space limitations I may just go with a two piece sectional. One side facing the black wall and one facing the window. The seating your are talking about in the bay window is called a banquette. I'd paint the walls a light shade of greige (that's a grayish beige) that blends with the carpet as the white just seems so stark in comparison. Replacing the valances on the bay windows with roman shades would update that area. I think a round table at the banquette would look great there, adding a two or three parson chairs to round it out.

I think you should move the couch by the window if it fits. I Would definitely paint with updated colors to create a artistic room. I would change out the window treatments and move the table. My suggestion is to start with moving the furniture first to get the feel for the room then the TV etc. Once everything is placed start researching your paint colors. Behr. com shows you room inspirations just so you can visualize new colors.

the area the table and chairs are doesn't seem to be a 'natural' set up for dining. The bay window area would look great as a focal point with full length window panels you can easily open and even have a bench creating your nook ( full length has never gone out of style lol) to add some drama; your choice of 'pop' colour in solid or print. Because of your restricted space it might be nice to get a counter height moveable rectangular 'island' for along the back of your sofa with a a couple of 'for counter height' stools. Then you can sit in that space to eat and watch tv, see out that great window etc and be able to pull it away from the back of the sofa and add a couple of seats ( maybe kept off to the side or in your storage room) for dinner with guests. The area the table and chairs are in now then becomes a great space for added storage or comfy seating.

Full length curtains are a thing of the past.I do not recommend covering that beautiful window.

Would remove that shelf holding the radio - just breaks up a wall you could use for art. I agree that the valence has to go as doesn't suit your contemporary furniture. .Don't agree that full length draperies are out of style. Would also suggest you get some colour on the walls as the room looks cold. Am not digging the light fixture. Depending on how modern your furniture is, perhaps a different fixture would be more suitable. Love the window. Am not sure why one part of the wall was painted black.

Is this a rental? If so,what are you allowed to change? Like paint, fixtures? Is there a eatin kitchen or does this room have to accommodate dining as well (as seen in the picture a dining table)? The size of the room and all its functions will determine the size and quantity of furniture. I like the idea of replacing the light fixture if you can and the banquette with round table and two chairs that can double duty for entertaining/ tv, that can be easily moved about the room, if it serves as dining room too. I would paint the room, especially the black "feature" wall. All that does is make the room look choppy, the color on the walls makes the room look smaller. The height of the ceiling is awesome but the trim does nothing but drag down the room so I'd either remove them or paint it all the same. I'm not sure a pub table would work in this space. I made the mistake of getting one for my place and was fortunate to have been able to return it. They eat up a lot of space so a large room is best for that. Often times furniture stores have in store decorators that can help you with your selections at no extra cost to you, which in the long run can save you money as your less likely to purchase items that don't work that can't be returned. Well, those are my opinions....you'll get many, some good some not so much but in the end I hope your happy with the outcome.

What nobody else has mentioned yet is your traffic flow pattern. You want to make sure that you have no furniture blocking the flow from the front door to the kitchen and the kitchen to the bedrooms. I would put plantation shutters on the windows too, they go with just about every style. I'd paint the walls another color other than that off white.

Do you have room in your kitchen for a table? If you do I would not have dining room table as it takes up to much room. Agree that it needs to be painted a different color and paint the black wall the same. I don't think it needs to stand out. I don't mind the look of shelves on the left unless you have a wall unit you would like to put there. IKEA has some great floating shelves that look more substantial than the ones there. A small sectional would perhaps work facing your tv if you put it on the black wall. Good luck hope it turns out to your liking!

I like the idea of mounting the TV on the black wall, my son did that and its great.. the 3 piece sofa is a good idea as well, one out into the room in front of the windows , one in front of the tv, and one with its back to the kitchen area. IF you have the space between or in the Kitchen and that couch, thats where I would put the dining table, which would be closer to the kitchen but not too far from the living room... You can always rearrange things later as you go... the space in front of the windows (behind that couch) could be used for plants (if you have them) just leave room behind the couch to be able to walk into that space... Its unique I like it.

I would go on pinterest and houzz as suggested to find the style you are attracted to first. Use the inspiration to shop for pieces. I would place the couch adjacent to the tv but on an angle if the room is angled the way it appears (if not then perpendicular to the black wall) this will create a visual path as you enter the home to move towards the kitchen. If you want the space to appear more open then face the back of the couch towards the kitchen and put 2 arm chairs facing the black wall with a small table inbetween. When you enter from the front door it will be more inviting to that space. I would look at changing out the ceiling light fixture as it does not fit the feel of a living room too.

Please do not mount the TV on the black wall...that makes it the center piece of the room. Build bookcases to the right of the "black thing" to house the TV. books, AV equipment, etc. Have the dining table in the "half" of the room that is next to the kitchen Instead of one HUGE sofa, how about two loveseats and some chairs? (None of those horrible "vinyl" monsters that have the huge arms.) Have end tables with lamps for easy reading. This can be a very useful and attractive room. 'Wish that I lived in your town so that I could help you.
