My sloped ceiling closet is quite deep at the bottom. The longest closet pole hangs at 72 inches high and 16 inches away from the wall at that point. At the base of this section the closet is almost 4 feet deep. I installed shelves that store folded clothing behind the hanging clothes. Each shelf is outfitted with fabric cubes to help keep things organized. The other part of the closet has a different angle of slope so I treated it as a separate entity. This one has a shorter clothing rod at 52 inches from which I hang my shorter items. I ran a second rod behind the first and store my out of season clothes in vacuum space bags draped over the rod (black metal pipe). Under the hanging clothes there is room for two under-bed storage bins to hold flat items like blankets and sheets. I store my shoes in a shoe cabinet and have a storage bench at the foot of my bed for more storage. Two long but shallow dressers are on the sloped wall opposite the closets.

If I were up to an extensive remodel, I would try to utilize the space between the floor joists by creating built-in storage boxes covered by hinged door/floorboards. There is a lot of wasted space in that area which isn’t being used by HVAC, plumbing or electric lines. Our type of joists means deep depth in the floor cavities. Wish I could use it without so much work, but the drywall that creates the ceiling for the rooms below couldn’t support the weight I would be putting on it. I think it would mean pulling up the existing floorboards, adding cleats on each side of the joists and nailing in thicker boards to form the boxed in storage areas. Then build hinged floorboards and re-lay the flooring. That’s more work than I could handle right now.

Wow Susan! That's ambitious but I love the idea. You really have to max out your space when you live in a small house.
