An A-DOOR-able DIY Family Message Centre

When I had to come up with an upcycled DIY project from an old door for a contest I was in, I was inspired to create something pretty out of the most perfect chippy old door that I found!
This family message centre is the perfect place to store mail, write messages, keep track of events and hang accessories.
Here's the antique door I started with. Ain't it pretty?!
After cleaning the door, I very carefully wet scraped the peeling parts of the paint off (please consult a pro before you do this in case your door has lead paint).
Then I gave the entire door two coats of clear poly to seal and encapsulate the whole thing. I wanted to keep the original finish of the door intact for that shabby chic look, but I also wanted it to be safe and clean.
Next, I found this old picture in a frame at my local second hand store.
I painted the glass inside with chalkboard paint.
I made a DIY wire mesh basket that was a good size to hold mail. (Check out my previous post for how to make those!) Then, I spray painted both the basket and the picture frame with oil rubbed bronze spray paint.
I put the newly painted chalkboard inside the frame, and then my husband secured the frame and the basket onto the door. We also installed a mason jar (for holding writing utensils) and a few hooks.
Voila! This would work great in an entry or a kitchen area. To secure it safely to a wall, make sure you nail it into studs using an L-bracket. For more details on how I made this, check out my blog post.
