Wooden Ruler Growth Chart

Our kids are quickly growing up my husband noticed that we didn't have a growth chart for them. And he was right. We were documenting their growth on social media, chronicling silly faces, and the occasional silly comments. Since we relocate for our careers often, it was important that we have a growth chart that could move with us!

The goal of this project was to emulate an old fashioned ruler. While you could paint on the measurement lines with acrylic paint, we opted to use a wood burning tool. It made this piece even more memorable and it looks so realistic!

I'm giving a condensed tutorial. To see more, click on the blog link.

When you choose the board, look for a piece that is appropriate for your space. We chose a wide 8 inches becuase it was the perfect width for the space I wanted to fill up on the wall.

Once you have width determined, find a very straight board. It took us buying three boards and taking them home (they all looked straight or flat in store), to find the best one for us.

Using a miter saw, cut the board to size (ours is 6 foot). Our growth chart starts 6" from the floor. So it's max height is 6' 6".

We used a square and quickly made the tick marks with a pencil. We used the width of the square to make the tick mark bars.

Using a wood burning tool (they can be picked up at any crafting or home improvement store), fill in the area where you traced.

Next, you'll want to stain the wood. Before we stained ours, my husband took a palm sander and roughed up the corners and sides to make it look aged. Then, he applied the stain.

Apply hanging hardware to the back and it is ready to go! Here is ours in it's home. The kids love it and I like that it fits in with our decor!
