Repurposed Wine Box

Have you ever seen a project and thought you'd love to make it if only you could find a similar unique piece?

How likely would that be, right?

Well, it might be more likely than you think when you shop thrift stores for pieces to repurpose!
Here's the $2 wine box I found at one of the thrift stores I visit.

It probably wouldn't have been such an amazing find for me had I not already seen a project made from one that was exactly the same - and loved it so much that I wanted to copy the idea.
Sometimes my perfectly-laid plans get derailed, however, and my longed-for wine-box-repurposed-into-a-tea-chest project was a derail victim.

We had a more pressing need for an organized place to store our school pens, pencils, and markers - and the wine box was perfect!
First, I removed the lid, hardware, and rope handle.

I gave the entire piece a good sanding and filled the handle holes with wood putty.
Now to dress it up: the box got three coats of burgundy paint and I painted some scrolled wooden accent pieces beige.

I also had some wooden feet left over from a previous project and painted them burgundy too. I liked the idea of giving the box a little elevation - and added interest.
These lovely pieces fit perfectly on the ends and a little craft glue worked wonderfully to attach them.
I added the swirl accents to each long side, and attached the feet to the bottom.
Then it was all ready to go to work!
Problem: scattered pencils, pens, markers, and highlighters (which will mean lost pencils, pens, markers, and highlighters by October!)
Solution: A handy, organized, and pretty way to keep track of all our school supplies!
Textured recycled food cans fit perfectly in the box and make great holders.

I also added some round felt furniture pads to the feet to protect the table from scratches.

And that tea chest...I'm determined to make one yet! Keep an eye out for it. icon
