One way to store and stack along a wall in the garage is to use CLEAR large tubs with lids. You can label them if you like, but if you organize what goes in them, you can tell what is in them. I can see what are Christmas vs what are the tubs with fall decor, etc. Also it is easy to see which ones are clothes, extra paper supplies etc. Also, some people put bikes up on the walls with hooks to save floor storage. Old chest dressers from curb repurpose or from second hand stores make great storage for tools in the garage. You can buy clothes racks that can be covered with something as simple as a grill cover that zips shut to keep the dust off. Also, don't forget the storage baskets that stack on each other from the dollar stores. They are only $1 each and come in many sizes. Peg boards are also handy on the wall to hang tools on "s" hooks. My husband drew around his so anyone in the family that uses them knows exactly where to return the tool they borrowed. That helped the children when they were young to also learn to put things away. Another idea, don't forget the rafters. 2 by's can be laid on top the garage rafters to add more storage tubs, especially the light weight ones for decorations, Christmas trees, etc. For all our lights, my husband winds each one around card board with 1 inch cuts on the edges to keep the cords from getting entangled. That way he could lay them all in the clear tubs and they were ready for use the next holiday. Hope some of these ideas help.
I agree that pegboards are really useful. You can get inexpensive stand alone plastic shelving at Home Depot and add clear plastic bins for storage.
