I'd empty the garage first, clean & sweep it out. Paint the walls a color of your choice to give it a new beginning. Then organize your items by need, size and seasons if necessary. Then section off areas for these items that will best work for you. If you have shelving, great, use it. Visit your local Habitat resale store, Goodwill and Salvation Army for more shelving items at budget friendly prices. Once you get started you'll be inspired to complete the task. Best of luck.

Sorry, I forgot to mention the use of clear storage containers for easy viewing.

Use large nails to hang the larger garden tools that always seem to get in the way and fall over. Once you get started, it is easy to hang a lot of the things in the garage. There are hangers for bikes you can use to get them off the floor. I also use kitchen cupboards for storage in the garage that were already there, or from people who were going to throw them away when they got new ones. I have one upper cupboard in the garage that I put the pots that take up too much room in the kitchen and aren't used that frequently. It isn't hard to go out there and grab them if I need them and they are much closer than in the storeroom/workroom in the basement. Use pegboards and the tool holders to hold all the hand tools that lay around on the workbench. Shelves and shelving units are great for holding a lot of garage items and bins, just make sure you label the bins as to what is in them. Once you get started, more ideas will come to you. Make piles as you go through things, one for garbage, one for give away that you can donate, and one for keeping. Go through the keeper pile and put near where you want to store them. If you have fishing rods you want to put up, get a piece of wood and notch it out wide enough to hold the rod, but not wide enough that the top eye won't hold it up. Nail it high enough on the wall so that the ends don't go down to the floor on the longer rods. Good luck! I hate cleaning the garage!

You can use racks, pallets, shelves, for small instruments use bin boxes and for important things use lockers etc. You can also visit Giraffe Storage Solution's website.
