shelving is best to put it all in one area and then totes to store and organize.
The best way to keep things organized is to have a place where each thing belongs.
Your son needs a tool box, pegboard or place to hang tools, and a couple of shelves.
You need shelves, garden tool hangers, and a workbench that you can share with your son.
What these things look like is completely up to you.
For example- Your work bench could be a side of the road furniture find, a couple of wide planks on two file cabinets, etc.
Once everything has a place to belong, make a rule that nothing comes in unless it has a place to belong. Get rid of something you are not using to make space for your new thing.
I hope that helps!

Put up lots of shelves, keep them for specific things, one for Christmas, one for your sons tools, etc. Go to garage sales, salvation army, etc. and get kitchen cupboards that people have replaced. They really help in being able to organize in the garage. I have a few in my garage. One of them I keep the larger pots and pans in, so I don't have to try to find a spot in my kitchen because they take so much room, and the things I don't use very often. I have one that I keep garden things and smaller bird feeder supplies. Another holds some of my hubbies larger tools. We have a smaller lower cupboard that he uses for other tools and some smaller boxes of nails, etc. in the drawer. We changed our bathroom vanity and are trying to find a place to put it also. Room is at a premium in the garage because I have my chest freezer and the huge side by side fridge that didn't fit in the hole when we moved in. Single car garages are the pits for finding space.

Buy or make Racking for all your items.
Go to Goodwill or Salvation Army and buy an armoire or entertainment center. They usually have doors, drawers and shelves. Put it up against the wall. Also build wooden shelves all around the garage. Hooks work well for bikes. My garage is not attached and has rafters where we store our Christmas decorations.
Clean it out. Get rid of what you don't use, is broken or missing parts. A good cleaning can make a world of difference. Then put like items in the same places. Use peg board with metal s hooks to help organize and tall metal shelving units to use space vertically.
