Before: I had a traditional two tiered pot rack over my window in a galley kitchen.
It had become crowded and difficult to retrieve pans from the under layers.
First I stripped it down and, working with my friend Gale, we tiled the upper wall with a small subway tile.
Next I used an Elfa standard that utilizes a top hanging bar (from the Container Store) to insure that all of the brackets were perfectly aligned. I used 3 standards, one in the middle to support the heavy weight. I then installed 3 wire shelves. The top shelf holds over-sized lids and pans. The center bar of the shelf keeps pot hooks in place. Pans easily nest and are individually accessible.
The middle shelf holds sauce pans and the bottom shelf holds small appliances.

Beneath I have a cart with a cutting board top. Pans and utensils hang along the back to free the room for the appliances.
And voila, a utilitarian design for efficiency
And the galley walls to either side, also packed like a sardine can.
