I picked up this little vintage pot cupboard at a local charity store. I forgot to take a before photo, but here it is after a light sanding with my Sandi Hands sanding glove. It is a wood veneer and quite light to carry, but I love those cute legs.

Step one: Sanding with about a 120 grit all over to roughen up the existing varnish is usually all that you need for most furniture projects.

Step 2: Mixing up the Tricycle red Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint is easy using a ration of 1/2 cup Milk Paint powder to 1/2 cup water. Mix by either shaking in a mason jar, using a small whisk or an old milk frother. Then paint all over x 2 coats.

Step 3: Here's where the fun happens with MMS Milk Paint. You may start to notice flaking of the paint in certain areas where the paint resists the underlying varnished surface.

See in the above pic how when I rub my finger over the paint, it flakes off? That's the chippy aged look I'm going for with this little antique cupboard. So grab your find grade sandpaper (about a 320-400 grit) and give the whole piece a rub over till most of the flaking has stopped.

Step 4: As you can see, I got quite a bit of chippy happening on the front of this piece. I then added this cute vintage stencil from Funky Junk Interiors before my final step.

Left: sealed, Right: not sealed

Step 5: The last step is to seal your piece and in this case, using a wax or oil was not going to be my best option as I wanted to make sure the flaking was not going to continue any further, so I sealed with Miss Mustard Seed's Tough Coat Sealer, a water based, non-yellowing poly acrylic sealer. You'll notice the colour on the cupboard deepen slightly, losing the chalky sanded look and creating a more uniform natural colour.

Step 6: Stand back and admire your piece! For more info and more pics, head over to my blog ...
