Do you want to paint them?
If it's country, you may want to glue the sides of wooden fruit/veggies crates, especially if there's a nice design printed on them. If not, still glue or staple them and paint over, so that it creates a sort of shiplap decor.
As for DIYing a bigger storage capacity, use crates above the upper cabinets, which you could paint in one and the same color, or different hues of the same one, or different colors.
Why not adding a pegboard to the side of your cabinet lines ? And to complete it, attach railings to the backsplash to hang different things you need daily.

Sugersoap clean to get rid of grease build up, then paint.
utilize wated area above the units with storage, perhaps matching basket ware if country style your thing
Hi Akossow15,
If you want to paint them, first clean them with a good degreaser. Many people recommend TSP (Trisodium Phosphate) for cleaning before you paint. Then gently rough up the surface with high grit sandpaper. What you are doing is giving the paint something to which to bond. Click below for step-by-step instructions that should help. Wishing you the best.

Wanna make it easy on yourself? Take the doors off. Take the hinges off with them. Clean the cabinets out completely. Prime. Paint in the color you’d like. A pretty light sage or a blue might be nice. you can add extra shelves as needed. Painting the back wall of the cabinets a light color shows off your dishes.
At the end of the run, if you have space, add shelves for storing bowls and platters that take up space in the cabinets.
If if you think you won’t be able to keep the pantry items neat, use baskets. Store like items and you can take the whole basket down. I do that for baking items and breakfast. Have fun!
I've had very good luck with Rustoleums Cabinet Transformations. The kits include everything you need to refinish your cabinets including the cleaner. The best part is there is no sanding required and no "use in a well ventilated area" restriction. Cleanup with soap and water.
