Hide small kitchen appliances

Joann Jarvis
by Joann Jarvis
I want to hide toaster, can opener etc. Have been on line but find appliance garages that I like but shipping costs as much or more then garage it self. Love the idea to declutter counter s and hide small appliances. Any ideas on making or buying something that will get the job done. By the way I just don't want to use the fabric appliance covers. Thanks, Joann

i made a 3 sided box out of luan and decorated it and put a pretty cabinet knob on it. got a lot of compliments and couple request. If u leave the back out of it U can put it right back over your toaster.with out waiting it for to cool and extra llight.

We have just put in a new kitchen. We have a small corner area where open counter with nothing above would be a big waste of space. Having been warned that some kitchen garage doors are difficult to push up and down we went with plain open shelves. The bottom "shelf" is simply the counter (Caesar Stone) and about 18 inches above is the second shelf. the next 3 shelves are quite shallow in height and the whole column is counter deep front to back (2 feet). On the bottom I have the mixer and food processor. You could use your own measurements to allow room for toaster ovens etc. Obviously because it is open I don't want to show my mess. We are still working on that. What is good is that the shelves can take big things and weighty things which upper cabinets wall hung cannot. Hope this helps

Do u want to leave these appliances out? If not? Can u make a space or two for them in cupboard or drawer?

http://www.bhg.com/kitchen/storage/organization/options-for-appliance-garages/ My parents had one similar to this corner breadbox...you could just put panels and a pull down/up door. http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/1163110/list/Kitchen-Accessory--The-Breadbox

If you don't want to eat up counter space, simply use the lower part of one of your cabinets (if you have space to do so). You can even wire the spot for electricity. That way it's functional and hidden.

I'm guessing you might be able to find one of those roll top breadboxes that were popular in the 80s (and coming back into vogue) at a grand sale or 2nd hand store to use for this. My hs beginning woodworking class took orders and made over 80 of these a year or so ago as a mass production project, I was amazed at the interest! We stained some, painted some white, and painted some white then antiqued them with stain.

I have a friend that bought a "glass bird house" design type box and painted it with glass paint. She hinged it and puts her appliances in it-- It looks lovely!

I used to have a blank wall in my kitchen, where I could place a stainless steel baker's rack that fit the area of the wall with room to spare. I lined the lower shelves with boards to span every inch of them and placed all the appliances on it. My coffee pot, blender, and can opener were on the table top shelf and things I didn't use that often like the crock pots, griddles, electric frying pans, and food processors were on the bottom shelves. I did not want to leave it open where everyone could see everything there, so I purchased some heavy duty fabric (sunbrella type) and sewed floor length panels with pockets for each side of the rack. I sewed ties on three sides of each panel, tying the top set of each ties to the top shelf, and the sides around the poles and the extra one to each other. The pockets are used for appliance plugs, lids or whatever else that goes along. This keeps everything tucked away and no one sees all the stuff, plus helps to keep it all clean and allows me to take it off the covers and wash them when needed.

I put mine on the countertop and made a curtain with a ruffle to hide them. I used a tension rod to hold up the curtain.

@Doris Flynn Hi Doris. Wouldn't that curtain get dirty/greasy fairly quickly? What about a small 'screen', similar to one that you would use to divide an open space, but obviously smaller to fit the appropriate space.

Oh I love that idea. I have to get out my measuring tape, I have a glass terriranium that just might work. thanks for the cute idea
  • The best thing I ever did was put in drawers that were large enough for most of my small appliances like the toaster. I have drawers for the bread, potatoes, mixer, rags, etc and have only the coffee maker sink strainer (which I want to get rid) and on my island I have my sealer for potato chip bags and other plastic bags. I hate clutter. and my microwave is upon a shelf which is actually a cabinet with a microwave shelf. best thing I ever did.

Just to le you know my endeavor to clean out my lazy Susan paid off in spades. Several bags of goodies to Salvation Army and lots of room for counter clutter to be hidden. I did keep the bourbon....it's really aged now. Looks like it will take me awhile to get organized but I'm working on it .thanks for your reply!

Hi Joann: Can you go thru' your cupboards, and be ruthless with items you don't want. Saucepans that don't have lids, or pans that have burnt 'bottoms', or fry pans that have lost the teflon coating? Just be 'brave'. I'm not a hoarder, unlike my other half and when I had the kitchen done, about 10 years ago - thankfully my husband was away on holidays, I was ruthless and discarded heaps of stuff, including about 100!! teaspoons that he had 'liberated' from various airlines around the world. Be strong.
