I've become aware that I don't have enough storage at home so I wanted to put a large cupboard with shelves at the end of the kitchen. I would like it to be away from the work area and use it for microwave, small appliances, hobby paint, candles, a few tools, cook books, brooms and in general stuff to get out of kitchen main work space that is not used daily. . I want more storage and but cannot store in the garage. I was thinking of building shelves on the brick wall and adding doors in front of them or buying metal shelves and also getting doors to put in.
I am thinking of what I need now and I also want to keep in mind the possible resale of the house later on.

  • For resale I would not try to drill or bolt anything to brick - Have you considered buying or building a pantry unit / hutch or something similar? One other option I like (which has a more commercial look) is rolling metal shelves - got company coming over you can wheel it elsewhere. As for brooms, generally there is a closet or someplace nearby where you can place them with the vacuum, etc... I understand the allure of doors but I wouldn't put them on those cheep metal shelving units - That generally weakens them & can cause issues later - I have seen some people use a drape to hide the whole thing or just a lower half.

I put 2 four foot wide metal shelves on 1 wall at the end of my kitchen /dining room and use it as a pantry. Then I got some 's' hooks large enough to hold a curtain rod and attaches that to the top shelf. Then I made some curtains to hang from the curtain rod with fabric that went well with my decor and used the round drapery clips that fit my curtain rod. ( ideas for easy inexpensive curtains that matches your decor: the top sheet for a full size bed fits well for a four foot wide metal shelf, or a new cotton paint drop cloth from the paint store. The drop cloths come in different widths and are usually 15 feet long. I just cut a 4 foot wide cloth and cut it to the length I needed. Works great in my house). Good luck

Do you or a friend have an available armoire or tall, narrow entertainment center that can be repurposed to a cabinet. You can readjust the shelves to the height you need. Perfect for what you want to store. Before you fill it up, I would put some heavy duty locking casters on it, so it moves easily. If not, build the same idea, and use shutters on the front, again adding casters. Good luck. Post a photo so we can see!

I would just go to Home Depot and by a plastic or metal cabinet with shelving for under $100.00...doors included
