How do I customize into shelving and storage?

Deborah
by Deborah
This small section of my kitchen wall houses an ugly coffee stand at the moment. What can I do to make this section a well organized, functional space? Since my cabinets are scary and lack space (they have deep dark tunnels) I need extra storage and this space is the only wall I can do this on. Take a look at some of my inspirational photos and keep in mind industrial theme. How do I create this space to be packed with good storage solutions on a dime that looks good? I am hoping to combine open and closed storage spaces. #kitchenIdeas #kitchenstorage #Industrial
This is the ugly wall and rack. Planning to revamp my entire kitchen Industrial theme. This space needs storage mixed with open and closed shelving. How can it be?
I selected these photos carefully for the upper shelving. I need a mixture of these photos. I have jars and like the pots and peg board ideas here. Underneath this built componet will be the lower storage in next photo.
Lower Storage options. I would like to stay as narrow (unit doesnt need to sit out far into room). I would like to house things like crockpot, Large stock pots, dinning needs-serving trays and can goods if able,
Forget the built ins? Free standing shelving or built in shelving with perhaps one or two doors to hide things I don't want seen?
Love this idea; Highlight Open Shelves accented with a color-block backdrop. Create the look by masking off a large rectangle with painter's tape and rolling on your accent color. Remove the tape and hang your shelves.

Do you like things out of sight or open ?
    • Deborah Deborah on Jan 18, 2015
@Cheryl O'Neill I do like both. I have visions of what I want for this certain area it needs to house things I don't want seen. This is either crock pots, small appliances to free up cabinet. These items are lessor used and in the way where they are now. My deep dark tunnels? yea...I have to pull out one thing to get to another. So I think they would be better housed elsewhere where they fit properly. This maybe on top of cabinets in a nice box for these things as I mentioned. The areas Im talking about can be versitle notice the photo of the roll out wooden carts for can goods? Again I can clear one cabinet and use. Point IM trying to make is this kitchen needs some real storage no pantry. Im just trying to make it more functional and pretty. My goal is to have both open and closed shelving. Bottom base closed, use top for coffee maker/coffee nook. Above on wall-open shelving for all those pickle jars I have full of items I use.

What about a narrow cabinet, such as this? With two, you could connect them at the narrow end (the back) so that they open to the left and right, not to the front. The roll out doors allow access to the very back of the cabinet. You can have a glass top cut with rounded corners. This will sit close to the wall, not creating a barrier to the doors. As well, this still leaves all the space on the wall for open storage. The top would be a great coffee location. http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/S39869669/ (sorry, I couldn't get the picture to copy and paste)

@Deborah Thanks :) Ikea has an online option. As well, I would check re-sale stores such as the Habitate stores. You can also buy the rollout shelves at Lowes or Home Depot to adapt an upcycled cabinet. I love recycle, reuse, repurpose. This may not be the last answer, my mind is running now haha :)

Try using baskets below (lined or unlined depends on your taste). The gather a bunch of old glass jars, remove the labels and paint all the lids a matching color for storage on the upper shelf (some of those chalkboard labels would be cute here), then use storage trays on the main shelf for the coffee maker and it's supplies. Once well organized you may be amazed at how much you can store in this space and it will be easy for you to keep it clean too.

@Karen Girl, I got the jars! I collected and collected and have not used nearly 15% of them. I keep saying, as I hear complaints, I will pair down. I don't want to as of yet until I get this job done so I will know what is needed and what isnt. Besides that, Im always needing a jar for something even if it's on display or in fridge or anywhere in my house. I BELIEVE in jars, wine bottles, u name it. Yes must have labels! I just see so many crafts you can do with them and totally on my budget! I need a friend that lives close so I can rant for hours and do crafty projects together. ha As far as your idea, Im sure it will have a mixture baskets, jars etc. Because its economical and I have the stuff. I just need the piece built/rebought or something that cleverly works in its space. The coffee nook? Hubby and I are coffee drinkers my two kids, son loves HOT tea. He has collections of all types from around world and daugher loves her hot chocolate. Hence why I think we should have it. Im with you, once organized with jam packed stuff thats needed.

Deborah@ This could make some great shelving. You pick the width of board and recycle belts of your colour choice. very little $$ ;) (found this on Pinterest)

What about one of those tool cabinets. They have a couple of drawers and doors and are sometimes on wheels. You could then add open shelves above. Think you could paint the cabs and shelves in a colour to your liking..

@Deborah Sorry for your sit. Been there a few times. Keep your chin up. Find projects or "maybe" projects are a diversion to rest the mind.

Marion, Don't forget about utilizing Craigs List in your state. You may find a piece of furniture that has all the components you want, but in it's present state it maybe ugly as heck. You have to stay open minded and look beyond the ugly color or hardware. Some paint-chalk paint in a color you want and finish it off with a coating of clear wax or dark wax for a more antiqued look. Annie Sloane is the chalk paint guru, but terrible expensive. About $40.00 for a quart, $25-$35.00 for her brushes and I'm not sure about the wax. I've learned on you tube tutorials about this painting process that the items maybe expensive, but they go a long way. I have also been told that Joanne fabrics has similar chalk paint and waxes for under $10.00 for a quart. J.A. Fabrics also has on their web site half off coupons you can print up and use. Oh I rambled again. Sorry about that. I mention C.L., because I have found some really great piece . Fixed them up, and resold them for a nice profit. Best of luck! ~Dolly

@Dolly Thank you Dolly, Im not opposed to fixer uppers! In fact, I seem to thrive on the idea then I take it a step further, how can I do this as I invision yet cost effective? bahahaha...there are methods to my madness as I always tell my husband.

And don't forget to negotiate. Most expect that, that's how I've gotten some great pieces for cheap!

@Deborah you need an open mind and let the wheels turn.....and you seem to have that :) Did you like the Belt shelves? Very thrifty and you can be creative there as well.
    • Deborah Deborah on Jan 24, 2015
@Cheryl O'Neill I liked the belt shelves..Im just rethinking here because as you know, snowball effect. My entire kitchen IM taking into consideration and when thinking on this specific area, it's occuring to me more and more this area needs to be extremly verisitle. For instance, backsplash area Im realizing I cannot house all that i wanted to house on wall using vertical space not counter top space. That spice shelf I wanted mounted under cabinets? Well, it doesnt leave me room to hang my utensils and knife magnetic plank. So this would mean do I consider using the area as a combination? Not just a coffee nook. Another thought is, No pantry I have thought long and hard what are inside my cabinets that I can place on display thats not cramped? Freeing up cabinet space makes more room for unsightly things you don't want seen. Those 10 pickle jars that currently sit on my countertop? 8 of these can be moved to open shelving in this area. SO I guess I should say, open pantry/coffee nook/storage below combination. I think the entire wall should be shelved including above my back door but not sure if it's too much? Storage is needed. .
