Looking for diy pantry storage ideas

Paula
by Paula
I got the idea of organizing the pantry with bins and crates to keep things together but I've been looking for ways to store canned goods. I have seen a few organizers but they are quite expensive seeing as I have a large supply of canned goods. I like buying fresh and frozen but because of frig space often go with canned goods. The shelf life is a little longer and I too like buying a bargain or couponing, but find it hard to store items like this in bulk.

You can often talk to local grocery stores. The roll down racks they use on their shelves are replaced frequently. They often just throw away the old ones. All they need is washed and they are ready to go. The thrift stores sometimes have them as well for cheap.

I am sort of a compulsive organizer (at least that is what my friends say). I think that can goods are easy just to stack. I put my cans together by category: vegetables, beans, tomatoes , fruit, etc. Then I separate each category into each item. So that in the vegetable area, I put all the corn together, peas together, green beans, etc. I face all cans to the front and either stack one can directly on top of the other or use two cans as a base and stack one can on top. I have done this for years and my cabinet always looks neat, the goods are easy to find, and it costs nothing.

I feel your pain:) I left behind my custom kitchen when we moved from GA to NC and now have to deal with non-adjustable shelving in the kitchen and baths. I try to think of it as exercising my brain to figure out how to best organize within the limits of what I have! By the way, did you notice that we are practically neighbors? I'd love to meet another home talker.

I buy can goods by the case and they come in their own either box with the fronts cut out or just on a flat stackable cardboard about 3 inches high. I stack all the vegetables of the same cans and can still see what I have on the shelves.

The problem is if I put them in the pantry they get shuffled around and never seem ro stay neat and organized. I'm looking for some kind of way to keep green beans together and corn together

I use lazy susans from Ikea for my cans, along with plastic bins & baskets from Dollar Tree.

I've had luck using soda can dispensers. They are usually wire with white coating and they are supposed to be used in the refrigerator. Here is a link to one in chrome from Bed Bath and Beyond: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product.... Good luck!

In the frig for pop (yeah I'm from Ohio) and in my step back cupboard I use for a pantry, I get racks for pop that lets the first one roll out. It's kinda like this but only $1 at dollar store
