You did not state how long the drawers were. Can you put them in sideways?
There is drawer dividers that go from front to the back of the drawer. You can get 4 or 6 and and use two or three drawers for cutlery.
I had this problem too... I put the silverware daddy in the cupboard. I was forever answering the question "where is your silverware? "😁
I repurposed a dresser in the kitchen to house my silverware and cutlery. Then upgraded to a rolling kitchen cart
Could you use a thin piece of wood to make custom deviders but put them in the drawer at an angle? Like diagnal? Seems like it would be easy enough to do.

For knives, use a magnetic strip inside a cupboard door.
There is not one single drawer built into my kitchen. So I have had to improvise. I did have a space at the end of a counter which this many drawer cabinet fit in. The top row of drawers holds teaspoons, forks, knives, big spoons, then under the fork drawer is another fork drawer that holds salad/dessert forks. The remaining 21 drawers hold a multitude of things. It might sound awkward to open five drawers when you are setting a table but do you realize how many times you just want a single utensil? I also have a hanging rack for metal mixing spoons/spatulas and containers for whips and scrapers and wooden spoons. p.s. this has been painted since this picture was taken.
A dishwasher silverware basket screwed to the wall in a handy place solved the problem for me. Sorts them by like kinds & holds a lot.
My husband took out two drawers, removed the center between them with a jig saw and a dermal blade for the small corners or areas. He then took the center boards off, used one to glue the end boards to, and the other behind the two fronts, making one large drawer. Make sure your outside measurements fit the now double size opening.
