Organisation ideas for recycling in a tiny kitchen

Meagan Palmer
by Meagan Palmer
Our kitchen is very small. We have one bag for recycling our plastic, paper, metal, and glass, which was given to us by our local recycling company. We have a second bag that we use for the plastic bottles we recycle which we get money back for. These photos show the space we have available for our recycling. Unfortunately, this is the only real space we have for it. I need ideas on how to use this space better.
The bag for most of our recycling
Bag for bottles. We also store the rest of our shopping bags here
The rest of our kitchen
And the other half of our kitchen.

I have a smaller galley kitchen too and use a regular sized shopping bag to collect recycling. As the bag fills I move it to a oversized dog food and grass seed bags in the garage for collection as we have to bring our recycling to a collection center. We have no curb side collection offered in our rural area.

If you dont have a garage could you relocate the recycle collection to your cars trunk until its time to surrender?

The only other idea I can think of is build a small shelf and put a plastic bin or tote there in your spot for collecting. Space in small kitchens is quite precious.

No garage. No car. We live in a 61 square meter apartment that we're hoping to be out of within a year. I've been trying to figure out how to fit plastic bins and shelves into this tiny space. Do you know of any containers that would be narrow enough, yet big enough to fit a decent amount of rubbish? We take our recycling out to bins outside, but we tend to only do so twice a week. Unfortunately, all of our produce is wrapped in plastic in this country, so we end up with a crazy amount of plastic, as well as paper to recycle.

We're actually hoping to do away with the bags as storage. They're really annoying, and make such a mess! I'd like to have a separate container for each recyclable item.

You can use a slim dog food dry container .it is tall and narrow that would fit in that space

I use Fliptop bins myself. Inside I keep the bags, which when full get transfered to outside bins....

Something like this is narrow, but not worthy of consideration and cost —if your moving.

Most off these shelf units for recycle and trash bin systems are 9 gallon rather big for your situation which appears narrow and I’m not sure how deep.

The most economical situation would be is to put wooden shelves ( that you would custom build yourself) in your spot and make the most of every inch of the space that you have there.

Perhaps your recycle totes might store better that way as well as claim storage for other things? I sympathize with your lack of storage and closets....smiling most of my beds are on risers and I store supplies and linens below the bed and boxsprings!

I love the idea of turning that little niche in the kitchen into those sliding shelves! When we got our kitchen redone(you should have seen it before!) we had a new baby. So we just wanted something quick and easy to go into that place. But now that we're stuck here longer, we might look into that idea. It'll give more value to our place for when we sell it.

five of the louvered doors to the right are a coat closet. The floor of this closet is where we keep our recyclables, we have a wire rack for newspapers, a collapsible cotton sq. container (this is one of the very best things we have ever bought!) for tins/plastic and a small plastic wastepaper container for returnables. Our town has no trash pickup so we must take to transfer station, so of course can do it on our schedule.

I don't know how deep your closet is,but I use laundry bags hung on coat hooks for plastic, glass and cans and use plastic bins for card board and boxes.
