You could put serving dishes or small appliances that are not used very often, that;s one suggestion.

I have never understood the need for these cabinets way up high and out of reach of many women who do the cooking, they are just not practical for something other than storage.

    Here's my theory:

Since many kitchens plans are a construction type of project, it was no problem for the typically taller man in the household to reach the contents "up there".

Looks like we are stuck with the step stool as a solution for our lack of height.

  • I store the things I don't use often, like that giant roasting pan for Thanksgiving.

  • Use it for storage of the season stuff like for Christmas that you only take out once a year.

Believe it or not it’s not that difficult to to drop your cabinets down to a height more to your liking. First, empty the cabinets. Then get a friend to help. Build a ‘deadman’ (see picture). Instead of a ‘T’ shaped one I prefer an upside down ‘U’ shaped one. Make it to where the top of the deadman is at the height that you want the bottom of your cabinets to be. As a minimum use 2 x 4 lumber, 2 x 6 being even better. With the wider wood it’s not so ‘tippy’. Place the deadman in position and have your assistant help support the cabinet. Remove the cabinet door and shelves if possible. Using a ladder or stool locate the screws securing the cabinet to the wall. Remove them with a cordless drill/driver. Now ease the cabinet down the wall onto the deadman. Reinstall the screws using the existing holes and if the cabinets were screwed into studs they still should be. Do the same with the rest of the cabinets, reinstall the doors and shelves as well as your dishes and such and you’re done.

I store items that are bulk like paper towels, seasonal decor, and vases in my cabinets that I have to use a 2 step ladder to reach. I keep the ladder at easy access.

I put in seasonal dishes I rarely use (make a list of what you put in there) anything that isn't used often. I use a step stool and have someone stand there while I get what I need from the higher cabinets

Store seasonal items you rarely need in those cupboards and have someone help you when you need to get them down.

Do you have room to keep a step stool nearby? That would make it easier to access this area. Regardless, it sounds like an area that would be best to store things you rarely use (seasonal decorations, etc.)

I had my hubby take down the cabinets in the laundry room (I am short and their were too high). He lowered them about a foot and now I can reach them all. Didn't cost anything except our time.

I agree with Zach, drop them.

I used 2 paint cans stacked in each other to hold them in place instead of the T.

Hi Bj, I would use them to store under used items, put thing in there that you only use once a year or so. This may free up space in the cabinets you can easily reach

Hi! I only use highest cabinets for rarely used items like holiday dishes. I also have a small step ladder that folds flat for reaching them safely.
