Table of Contents Spice Drawer Organizer DIYOne of my favorite kitchen organization projects to date is reorganizing my kitchen spice jars with all matching glass jars and labels.

I am very passionate about an organized home but especially in my kitchen.

I like to know where everything is, have clutter free counters, and have it all look beautiful at the same time too!

Originally, we stored all of our spices vertically in our top pantry drawer with no organizer.

Now that you have these beautiful matching & alphabetized spice jars, it’s time to show them off!

Why A Custom Spice Rack?

It’s easy, inexpensive and extremely sturdy.

For my drawer, it also helped me MAXIMIZE the space. No one likes to waste precious drawer space.

Now you could get lucky and find a tiered spice drawer organizer that fits your drawer perfectly.

But generally, not all drawers are created equally and if you want that built in magazine worthy spice drawer that uses the entire drawer you will have to go either expandable or custom.

Expandable Spice Drawer Organizer

Learn from my trail and error. I tired a few different expandable spice drawer organizer options myself and to be honest, these were great.

There are LOTS out of expandable spice drawer organizer options.

Here are the drawer inserts for spices that I tried:

For me though, I found that maximized the width of my drawer but not the depth.

So that was the main factor in why we ultimately decided to build our own spice drawer organizer.

Explaining the situation to my talented DIY’er husband, he says to me you know I can build you a custom that spice drawer organizer out of wood right?

And so that weekend he got to work on building custom spice drawer organizer!

Custom Spice Drawer Organizer

How You can build it, Let’s Do this!!

Materials Used:

  • 13 ply Birch wood (we just used leftover pieces that we had)
  • Clear coat spray paint

Tools Used:

  • Table saw
  • Chop saw
  • Pocket hole jig

How To:

  • Measure & cut your wood to the size of your spice jar height.
  • Standard 4oz bottle should be about 4 ¼” tall
  • Attach a small piece to the bottom of that piece to create the tiered ledge.
  • The small piece should be about the size of your spice jar lid.
  • We had 4 total pieces that we then connected with hidden pocket holes.
  • Then it was time to sand and make it pretty!
  • Next cover it with a water based polyurethane to protect it.
  • We actually used spray poly clear top coat which was very easy

Here are a few photos of the project.
