You could lift it outside and move it in through a window. Or use a winch to pull things up the steps.

    Hi Jacqueline,

By yourself, I can't think of a method. If you have help, you could gather several people along the stairs and slide the furniture down, but they would need to be strong people and you risk damage to the furniture and the stairwell, as well as possible injury to the people helping you. It might also be possible to construct a pulley/lift system that would be strong enough to do that but all furniture would have to fit through the windows and be light enough not to fall. I think your best bet would be to hire a professional unless someone else can come up with a better idea. Good luck.

That's the wording I was looking for... pulley lift system. Thanks y'all. I have a balcony then lower it down. Most of my things will be in totes/ lids

    Hi Jacqueline,

You will not be able to use a pulley unless you can secure it above you and it will stick out beyond the balcony. You have gravity working for you to pull things down so you just need to control it. You will want to use a sling with a carabiner and a rope to lower things. Essentially you are belaying your totes to the ground like you would a rock climber. It will take three people to make this work. One to manipulate the load over the railing, one to control the load, and one to receive the load (although I guess you could just lower it to the ground). Can I ask why the stairs won't work for you?

It was a pain going up down and around moving in. I just wanted to simplify the moving out process if I can. I'm on 3rd floor with a balcony/storage off living room and balcony from my bedroom as well.

    Jacqueline,

Based on the pictures, it looks like you do not have a good set up to use a pulley and the railing does not look like it will stand up to hoisting a lot of weight over it. Too high and too dangerous. As much trouble as it is, the stairs are your best bet. I owned a moving and storage company and if we needed to pull something up to or off the balcony because it would not fit up/down the stairs, it would have been done with a crane. If it was very light, then we might have muscled it by hand, but we would have had the manpower and equipment to do it. You do not want to risk injury or property damage. Make you totes and boxes light. Do not use the wrong size boxes filled with heavy items that will be unsafe for the average person to carry.

Hi Jacqueline. I'm Cindy. If you choose to move things out over your balcony, don't use the rail to accommodate any weight. It will not be strong enough and will cause damage or injury. I'm sorry to tell you that using the stairs is the safest way to move out. Good luck Jacqueline.
