I love tote bags, have different ones for grocery’s, clothes shopping, the farmers market, thrift shopping, Flea markets and garage saleing. But I don’t have a bag that I can sit on the floor without it falling over and perhaps breaking my precious finds. So i decided to make a bag out of a box, cover it with fabric and put very long handles on it. I love it and perhaps i need to make a few more for the other uses i have in mind!
To begin with i found everything to start this project in my sewing room closet. Had this cute little box and enough denim fabric to clothe a small country, i also had a half a bed sheet for the lining of the box. So i measured all side of the box, i cut one piece to go around entire box, make sure you allow enough for seams and enough to fold over the box. I added enough for 3/4 inch seams and 2 inches in length to fold over the box. Then also cut 2 pieces for the other side of the box adding the same seam allowance and fold over fabric. Cut the same measurement of a contrasting fabric for the lining of your box. For the handles i cut lengths of fabric to make a 108 inch long piece, they are 3 1/2 inches wide. Sew the ends of the strips together to make circle, fold the raw edges together on the bad side and press.
Sew the seams of the lining together turn it inside out so when you put it in the box you see the finished seams. Make sure all corners fit in and pull up so the remaining fabric can fold over box. Glue the raw edges to the box so its held in place when you pull the outer fabric on. The handles are pinned on to the main piece of fabric, make sure you measure this so you have the same length of handle on either side. I only sewed the handles down to the edge where i am going to fold over inside the box. When the handle are attached to the main part take the remaining handle and put the edges together and sew!
Take the box and centre it in the middle of fabric and pin all sides together. When you have finished sewing turn right side out and use a pencil to “poke” out corners. If your seams are wide you can cut them back a little so there is no bulk from the outside. Make sure when you set box inside of fabric the all corners are matched up. Pull remaining fabric over the edge of box and glue down to inside. I also glued a piece of ribbon to cover the raw edges on the inside.
You now have a magazine, craft, knitting, toy, picnic, thrifting, garage sale....box/bagicon
