Easy Basket Makeover With Paint
Do you want in on a little secret? I know a very easy way to makeover a basket with paint! The secret is to use chalked spray paint!

The lining of the basket is filthy and it has embedded dust and toothpaste stuck to it!
The boys used it to hold toiletries in their bathroom in Kentucky!
I didn’t realize how dirty it was because their deodorant, toothpaste, and other items covered up the liner.
I almost put it in the trash when we moved because I never really liked the color of it!
However, I kept it, thinking I would clean it up and find a new place for it!
I’m so happy I saved it!
I have big plans for this cute little basket!
I’m planning to use it to hold toiletries in my guest bathroom.
So, two years later, this hidden gem is getting a makeover!!
Am I the only one who procrastinates on stuff like this?
Oh well, let’s not waste another second!
I can’t wait to makeover this sweet little basket with paint!
GATHER
- Basket
- Seam ripper (only if your basket is lined)
- Primer- I used Rust-oleum 2X Flat White Primer
- Paint- I used Rust-oleum Chalked in Linen White
- Wood applique- purchased from Hobby Lobby
- Wood glue- I used Gorilla Wood Glue
PREP
I have several steps I need to do before we can paint the basket!
1) Remove the liner from the basket. If you plan to use it, wash it on a gentle cycle. Hang it to dry. My liner still looked dingy after washing it so I decided to discard it.
2) Clean the basket, I used Dawn dish soap and gave it a light scrub! Rinse well and sit outside to dry.
3) Protect your work surface- I used craft paper and cardboard to protect my garage floor.
4) Elevate your basket. I used these paint risers but you can’t see them for the paper!
5) Sand the rough edges of the wood applique, if needed.
PRIME
I like to use a primer if I’m going from a darker color to a lighter one. Primer also helps the chalked spray paint to adhere to the basket!
Hold the spray primer 10 to 12 inches from the basket.
Use short back and forth strokes to apply the paint.
Keep the can in constant motion.
Allow the basket to dry to the touch.
Turn the basket over and repeat the steps.
Don’t forget to prime the wood applique!
PAINT
Paint the basket using the same steps and technique you used for the primer.
Paint the wood applique.
AGE AND PROTECT THE BASKET
Paint can make a basket look brand new!
It looks very pretty white, but I want it to look old.
So I’m going to age it with antiquing wax.
First, I took a lint-free paper towel to apply clear wax to the applique and basket.
Then, with a small brush, I applied the dark wax to the applique and wiped it away with the lint-free paper towel.
Next, I applied the dark wax to the basket.
You can see what it looks like in the top left corner.
Notice how it brings out the detail of the applique.
ATTACH WOOD APPLIQUE
I used gorilla wood glue and clamped the applique to the basket until the glue dried!
COMPARE THE BEFORE AND AFTER PICTURES
Can you get over the difference?
Isn’t it amazing what spray paint and a wood applique can do!!
Here are a few pictures of the basket styled on my desk!
I love it so much, that it might not make it to the guest bathroom!
It’s the perfect size to put toiletries in, but it fits perfectly in this space too!
I guess you’ll just have to wait until I organize the guest bathroom to see where it ends up!
