In this post you'll learn how to:
  1. Create a stain using Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint
  2. Mix Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint
  3. Use Hemp Oil as a resist between two layers of paint or stain
  4. Paint & assemble a DIY IKEA Knagglig pine box
I started with the mini pine box from IKEA - if you're an "instructions person" you may or may not want to even look at these, as the assembly is easy peasy, but I understand if you cannot bear to throw that little piece of paper in the trash! LOL. But WAIT - before you assemble the crate ...
Think about it - this is going to be SO much easier to paint BEFORE assembly, than after, right?
We're going to a faux barnwood/Farmhouse look here, so to begin, I wanted to stain my raw pine to make it look like dark old wood.
Introducing Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint to use as a stain - YES!
Mix ONE part Milk Paint powder to THREE parts water. 1:3
I used the charcoal black colour called Typewriter.
Paint it on and let it dry!
Make sure you've painted ALL your pieces, sides, ends, everywhere.
In the next step, I used Miss Mustard Seed's Hemp Oil to create a "resist" between the stained layer, and the layer I'll be painting on top.
You'll see why later, but basically you'll end up seeing the dark stain peeking through the white layer we use on top.
Apply the Hemp Oil with a lint free cloth along the grain.
I like to work a section at a time, so have your Mixed Paint ready (shown in next step) before you apply the Hemp Oil.
Work on one piece of the box at a time.
Mixing Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint, which comes in powder form, is as easy as mixing equal parts water to paint powder - 1:1
I used the MMSMP colour, Farmhouse White.
Then apply gently to the surface of your wood over the Hemp Oil.
Don't paint back and forth over it, try to just lay it on the oil in one or two smooth strokes along the grain.
Allow this to dry.
When completely dry, gently sand the surface of the white paint with a fine grit like a 320 sand paper. See the top left section has been sanded gently revealing the layer of black Typewriter colour underneath.
Warning: if you sand too hard, you'll sand back to the raw wood. Gently does it!
Now I have all my pieces ready to assemble. I wanted to leave the insides stained, so only painted these pictured sections with the white layered effect.
You'll see closer details of these on my original blog post link.
The 4 small screws will pull the sides all together - make sure you get them the correct way up (okay, go get those instructions if you have to ...)
The 4 long screws will add the bottom on last.
And there you have it! An adorable little milk painted pine box to put your painting supplies or craft supplies in.
What would you put in your box?
