Millet how big is your attic? What kind of room would you like to put up there? Are you looking to add walls or leave open?

In order to use the attic for a living area you need to have at least two ways to get out of the attic in case of an emergency. It also needs to have electrical outlets, etc. If you are going to use it only for storage, you would be ok without these things. Make sure whatever you plan on having up there will not be harmed by the heat of the summer or the cold of winter. You could make temporary moveable walls that you can move around as the needs in your attic room change. You could also use the metal or plastic storage shelving to make walls that will serve double duty. The outside can be for extra storage and you can cover the inside with sheets attached to the shelving to make the internal walls of the room. Again, you would be able to move them around if you decide to change the layout of the attic. I hope this helps you find a way to create the room in the attic that you want, or at least helps get an idea going for you, Millet!

You have to check on each state, I have been to many places where they are required to have a ladder nearby the windows for an escape route if the stairway is not usable in an emergency. We had a finished attic in a rental house and didn't require one because the front porch extended across the front of the house and was easily assessable from the front windows to get out in an emergency, as well as a small side entrance porch roof.
