I have this problem where after I wash and dry my clothes I can't seem to get them put away.. or if I do it seems pointless because when I need to find something to wear it will be all pulled back out again! Any handy DIY PROJECTS to get my closet organized? Thanks in advanced

  • I found it helpful to get rid of as many extra clothes as possible. Less clothing is easier to organize. Then I take a day and wash and clean all the dirty stuff and organize it properly. It's so much easier to upkeep when it's done properly once. I also do one load everyday and force myself to fold and put it away before I do another load the next day.

I agree with Adrienne on purging. Mine is organized dark to light, heavy weight to light weight. I hang everything except underwear and it has made it so much easier to find things. Using the thin flocked hangers will give you much more space too.

Doing this method allows me to think like this...I want to wear shorts (grab where they hang) then I need a red tank top (grab where they hang). Quick and easy to put together an outfit.

Purging is a good idea. Do you have clothes that do not feel good or don't fit like you want? Give them away. If you haven't worn something for two years, put it in a bag and give it to a thrift shop. I have two rods in my closet on one side. Top rod is for clothes I wear for "good". The bottom rod is for clothes that I wear for every day. The other side of my closet has one rod and it is for long dresses, skirts and slacks. If you have room, you can put your heavy winter clothes in bins and store them away till next season. When winter things are out, then put your summer things in the bins. Lots of bins will fit under your bed and be out of the way. If you live in a place with only one season...then purge at least once a year to make way for new things. Some of our clothes just need to be given away because of wear and tear....even though we do really like them.

Spend a day, maybe with a couple of friends, and go into your closet a pull out a “type” of clothing out, like all your jeans. Determine if they fit, or you haven’t worn them, or if you just have too many choose your favorites and give to your girlfriends or donate, set aside maybes. Then fold what’s left and set aside. Then go in and choose something like all white tops, repeat, hang back on hangers, but set aside. White T-shirts fold and roll. Then go and choose the next type of clothing, all the skirts, all dressy tops, jackets.....now the pole(s) is empty, clear the floor, do the same with shoes. Hopefully you have eliminated a good portion. The items that are seasonal, box up but on outside of box write on wide masking tape what’s in the box and especially something you love like ?The sequined bomber or whatever. Then store it. ( be sure the label is facing outward so if you need to you can find it easily) . Then hang things back in closet. Hang long items maxi’s, jumpsuits, on one end, then maxi skirts, palazzos, tunics. Then color coordinate your tops. Also if you can fit a hanging sweater organizer put your jeans, sweatshirt type things fold those in that. Then it all comes back on you to keep it organized.

One thing I've done for myself and many clients over the years, is add a 2nd hanging rod to the closet for pants/skirts on bottom and tops hanging on the top rod. If the closet is very tall, if it doesn't already have a top shelf, add one. The shelf I use with plastic crates to store out of season clothing.

    Here are some videos.... https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=how+to+add+a+second+rod+in+a+closet

A few words of caution, make sure the rod leaves enough space to get the hanger on it. Make sure the rod is far enough away from the back wall for the hanger to not hit it.

When adding the rod, I use a piece of 1x 3" lumber on each side of the closet to fasten the rod holders into, and it can also serve as a place to add another shelf above the lower rod. Add a bracket in the middle if its a very long rod to support the weight. Check the rod level before fastening the last rod fastner.

I have found many times I need to move the top shelf up to accomodate 2 rods. I use a top on a hanger to make 1 measurement, and a pant folded over a hanger to make the second rod placement so they don't drag on the floor.

If you still need an area for dresses, you can divide off a third to a quarter of the closet width by cutting a board to vertically fit the space from the bottom of the top shelf, to the floor Use angle brackets to fasten in place, Then add a top rod only. The two rod section, will have the rod hangers hung on one side on this verticle board.

I have another closet where I added those nylon hanging bags that fasten to the rod for my sweaters, handbags, and one for shoes. These I get at thrift stores real cheap.
