Mary...I would suggest a filing system. If you don't have filing cabinets you can purchase those filing put-together boxes and use them..they will work nicely. Just decide what you want to file together such as medical bills. All together or individuals (husband and children separately as well as yours). Vehicle repairs or maintenance. Large purchases vs small appliances. Warranties and booklets along with sales receipts. Once you get a system you will catch on quickly. Good luck. If you have more questions, feel free to ask. It's truly a good time to get started 2019.
A filing system. Try several until you find a method that works for you. Things I never shred are income tax returns. I had a problem where they claimed I didn't file more than 10 years back. I had a copy along with copies of my refund checks. Who is better at record keeping? Me, of course . . .
I have a file for everything! Each pet has their own medical file along with my own. Tax papers have their own file. Warranties for each appliance and a separate file for each utility or service provider. I do not have a computer so all my records are old fashioned paper. We have been hacked and had identity theft so many times, we pay cash for everything and write a check for the monthly bills.
For File Folders, you can get an old wire record holder or a new version that they sell on Amazon:

You can get wall pockets to holder different items, so you can quickly drop them in :

I have used a bread box in the past and I have also installed small plastic pockets on the inside of the closet door to store receipts, warranties, and even coupons:

Hope these ideas help.
You could get a filing cabinet and label the different folders with appropriate categories.
