How can I make my own Jewelry organizer

I am looking to make some kind of Jewelry organizer that can hold long and short necklaces as well as my earrings (i have stud and hook style). I would like to have it covered.

I don't like to leave my jewelry out all the time. I prefer a drawer. A trick I have been using for forever is to put the necklaces in drinking straws. Straws come in many diameters. I put half a necklace through the straw and clasp it to the other end on the outside. If the necklace is short, cut the straw and follow the same procedure. I never have tangled necklaces. Amazing how many necklaces you can keep in a drawer witht his simple trick.
Do you mean covered as in you want it to lay flat on a surface or can it hang? Do you mean covered so contents can not be seen or can it have a glass covering? Is your jewelry collection ever increasing or pretty static?
I would suggest a large picture frame hung on a shallow box that can have hooks for necklaces on one side and some sort of screening/cane or other item with holes where earrings can hang on the other side.
