What worked well for me and several friends was this... Label each box with the room it is going to and also with an A, B or C depending on how soon you will need the contents. "A" boxes for immediate ( coffee pot, underwear, toothbrushes, birth control pills (just kidding), etc.) B for what you'll get to in a few weeks if you're lucky !, and C for things like Christmas decorations and out of season clothes. If friends help you, tell them to be sure the A's go in the front or on top of the pile in a room and the C's at the bottom so you don't have to dig for important stuff as you unpack. Oh, and be sure to have wine ready, you're going to need it!!

You'd be surprised at just how much of your old things will not be used in your new home! I just moved 2 years ago, and even tho I moved to a larger house, what I had in my old home just didn't work in my new one. After you've gotten rid of all you can, pack your boxes one room at a time, label everyone with the room they belong to, and have a pad handy to write a list of everything in that box and put the list in a zip lock bag and attach it to the box by the bottom of the bag with tape, so that if you think something is in there that you need, but don't want to unpack the whole box first, you can just take the list out of the bag and read it. You'll be so surprised by how organized this will make you once you're unpacking into your new home! Good Luck and wishing you much happiness in your new home!
Don't pack normally. Wrap your dishes in all your towels. Wrap everything in clothes that you fold. Put a different color paper or tape on each box for the same room. Put those boxes in that room, and go from there.
When moving I try to pack each box with things for the rooms n the new house, not necessarily where they are in the old house. Then label the box with where it should go in the new house. For example, if you store your linens in the room where they are used in your current house, but have a common linen closet in the new house, gather your linens from all the rooms and pack them all in one box marked linens. For home decor, pack things that must go together in sets and everything else by type. For example, pictures/paintings, statues/memorabilia, and candles/candleholders. This is a great time to cull your closets and toss or donate what you have not used in a year. If you have a kitchen with a separate pantry you can pack those items separately but still keep type items together: dinnerware/utensils, baking pans/tools, pots/pans, and use your kitchen linens to cushion breakable items. Pack your flat items on the side to reduce breakage. Make sure to mix up your pantry foods so that all canned goods are in one heavy box and all spices and boxed goods are in one lightweight box.
