  • Second hand dressers that you can make over, underbed bins, bookshelves with pretty baskets or bins.

I put in the double rods with my tops on top and my slacks and skirts below. I put my shoes in the coat closet in the entry along with our emergency go bags. Everything else is folded in the dressers and chest of drawers. My husband has his closet arranged the same way. We do have a linen closet.

How about creating a “closet” space on a wall? Put set of shelves on each side of an empty wall. In between the tall shelves hang a closet rod. Maybe attach the wooden closet rod through a round hole in the top (on the side) of each set of shelves. You will have shelf storage on each side and clothes hanging space in the middle.

I saw an attractive solution in a recent issue of “Canadian House & Home” magazine. The couple used 2’ of their living room. (2’ is needed for a clothes hanger). Their living room was 19’ x 12’ wide. They simply hung a clothes rod 12’ wide at one end of the 19’ wall. Therefore, they reduced their living room by 2’ (down to 17’ x 12’) but they happily gained 😊 an extra 12’ width to hang their clothes. If you don’t need a 12’ length of rod for your hanging clothes, you could also build some shelves for the “folded” clothes such as bulky sweaters or jeans or whatever it is you hang. The couple then mounted a ceiling-hung drapery track and attractive drapes/curtains went from wall to wall hiding the new “closet”. If I were doing this project, I’d look for curtains the SAME color as the other three walls so it visually blends in.

I now live in a condo and am also tight for storage. In my living room, I have a typical coffee table and sofa table BUT my end tables are Chinese chests which hold a myriad of items that I need to store. Perhaps, you could use a trunk as a coffee table and use the storage for clothes. There are actually quite a few ways in which to increase storage!

Also ... it doesn’t hurt to be constantly weeding closets and drawers of clothes you no longer wear. Good luck!

Also, IKEA sells skinny ”shoe” bins that can be used like dressers. I have a makeover post where I show what I store in mine. Theyre a life saver

And, I hang Baskets wherever I have extra wall space and store all kinds of things
