Vintage Inspired Paper Mache Heart Boxes

Paper mache boxes are easy to find at any craft store, but I always struggled with an idea of what to do with them! When my kids plunked a few in my shopping cart recently, I brought them home and then gave them a vintage inspired makeover that I love!
I started by drawing designs onto the top of each box.
Next, I fired up the hot glue gun and went over each of the designs with hot glue. This was a little tricky and required patience and a steady hand. I had to pick off some excess glue in parts, but for the most part, this step wasn't too difficult.
Next, I painted each of the boxes with chalky paint. You could use any type of paint for this step; acrylic paint would work well, too. Just look for a matte finish to achieve a vintage look.
In order to give them a vintage look, I rubbed dark wax all over them.
Then, to really make the hot glue details stand out, I rubbed metallic cream wax over the designs. I used a regular paper towel to apply the metallic wax.
Finally, I cut scrapbook paper to size and placed it in the bottom of each container. This added a really cute touch when the boxes are opened!
Finally, I filled the boxes with candy (and ate a bunch of it along the way). They're so cute as little treat boxes for Valentine's Day!
This is a really simple project, but anyone who receives one of these boxes will be happy to have it! If you'd like a complete supply list and more photos, please be sure to visit my blog post!
