How can I update a vintage 1950’s mobile home?

Although the motor home we purchased a few years ago is in excellent condition it is truly outdated. EVERY square inch of wall space is paneled. I HATE paneling. What can I do without spending a fortune?

  • There is wood paint that is very good and the cost is about $40.00 a gallon.

I have put thin strips of plywood or even luan to resemble shiplap on old mobile home walls. If you bevel the edges slightly to creat a v in between pieces it really looks good. It took just $65 to do an entire bathroom approximately 6”x8”. That included the varnish to protect it from water. Luan would be cheaper but easier to break while installing. Some lumber departments will cut it for you for a small cost. Having them cut it makes it easier to take home in a car. Of course you could paint it a flat white and distress likely if you wanted a farm house look. I’ve had many complements on an inexpensive fix to a 1985 mobile home. If you decide to just paint the wallpaper be sure to clean it thoroughly and slightly sand it and prime it. That will give you a lasting paint job.you could still faux sheetrock it with lines if you want that look. There are easy techniques on Pinterest or Hometalk if you do a quick search.

I hate paneling, too. I painted it and I didn't fill in the grooves. You can use joint compound to fill them in and wallpaper, it that strikes your fancy. I used a good primer, only one coat, then latex paint. Has lasted 10 years without peeling or bleed through.

Our old mobile home was full of panelling. We sanded, primed and painted it. It looks charming and fresh now!

When you paint and the grooves still show, you can add 1/4 trim and cover as design. A house I just has re done in GA HAD THEEEEEE WORST PANELING I EVERRRRRRR 👀. MY CONTRACTOR USED 1/4” Sheetrock and covered it! It is beautiful and smooth now!!!!!🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿
