We live in a 112 year old house. When we first moved in 46 years ago we screened in, added lattice, painted and furnished our side porch for use in our Maine summers. This served us very well for many years, although about 30+ plus years ago we did have to have roof (deck) repairs made to the upper part of this double porch. Last summer we realized we were in need of such repairs again but could not really assess needs till recently. Turns out we needed much more than we did first time with the result that the entire structure was torn down. Because of its historicity to us and because my husband can do, and to save costs, he is doing what he can on repairs, tasks that don't require climbing. hefting huge weights.
How side porches looked last summer!
As house looked. Notice columns on end and on front porch.
Everything is gone but a narrow shelf &table!
How it looks now but with decking also removed
column needs major work
column needs repair badly. Wood filled in crack with filler added. Then this was smoothed and sanded.
Husband first trimmed off rotten part, then joined 3 inch blocks of wood (cut into triangle shape) together. He then used dowels to add them to the still good part of column. He used a special tool to make sure the dowels were centered on both sections.
Making progress on repair.
He next used a belt sander to smooth the new end piece.
Almost done!
Next came the paint job. This is one half completed. He must also fashion new capitals for the two posts he is repairing.
Suggested materials:
  • The tool to center dowels   (Hardware store)
  • Bondo for filler   (Hardware store)
  • Wood   (town dump)
