I like cheap and easy and I wanted rails so I decided to build myself front porch rail out of pallets. That's right. Pallets.
First take a reciprocating saw and cut the nails that hold the pallet together. Then take your 2x4s and attach them to your 4x4s. Measuring the height between your top and bottom one. Cut pallet to length you want or leave as is.
Screw each pallet board to the 2x4s. I put mine about 4 1/2" apart.
Then paint or stain. I painted mine with latex flat barn paint.
