I like the retractable awnings that are available. Nice to be able to extend or retract when need be.
Shay: I think these look very chic!

You could put pottery shrubbery around by the railings for more privacy.
I just did this foe a client. I added to the balcony posts to hold up an Arbor style roof. Attached beams just under gutter and made posts a little lower so water could run off. Topped off with lattice and clear corrugated roofing. You can add laiitce to side wall I'd need further privacy.
You should definitely hire a contractor to do this considering the overhang will need to be supported. Definitely can be done and I think it would be really nice!

I would put a gazebo up there. I have one on my deck, if you can't screw the gazebo to the deck up there you can put the legs in planters with bricks to save the deck. https://www.homeroad.net/2018/04/how-to-anchor-gazebo-without-damaging.html
Awnings. They come in a myriad of colors and patterns and can open or retract automatically (in case you accidentally leave it open in a storm).
The easiest solution would be an awning, like Baxter suggested. For privacy around the railings, you could get material that would complement the awning and lash it to the railing, as you sometimes see on boats. That would allow you to remove it for cleaning.
We put up a metal gazebo kit on our patio and I love it. You can get them in all sizes and add one to your back deck. It is better than an awning because usually those retractable awnings don't come out really far. Trellises allow rain to come through the slats too which makes it unusable in rain. The metal gazebo kit works great because I can sit out there even when the weather is nasty. We got ours at Costco and they have ones in different sizes. Check out their styles and sizes:

You can see ours in my post:

We were adding lighting to the gazebo and you can see the structure in the pic. Good luck! I can't imagine my patio without it now!
nice awning that can be pull out as needed and privacy lattice on the right
