You can get |amazing solar string/ fairy lights on Ebay for under $10. They come in different sizes and colors. I have strategically placed over a dozen different colored sets around my yard- on bushes, trees, woven through lattice, etc. At night they look very inviting and my neighbors wonder how come I have all those lights when we have an electrical blackout. I keep them up all year round and it's a nice touch for my yard. The other great thing about solar string lights is that they don't need a lot of sunlight to charge up. If you have a good small spot that gets good sunlight, stake the tiny solar panel there and work your lights around it.
What's the purpose of a pergola? Decorative?
Definitely. But they are wonderful for entertaining as it gives people a focus point and they usually drift toward it. Since the uppermost boards are placed vertically it blocks the harshness of the sun. I have an arbor that I have some lights attached to the top that make is such a wonderful spot at night.
