I'm tired of getting wet in the rain while unlocking my front door. I want to make an awning to keep dry.

There are awning available commercially that just bolt onto the house, and many local companies can do it for you quickly. If you want to DIY, then you need to build a shed roof that has diagonal supports, horizontal supports and a roof with roofing material. The top needs flashing to prevent water intrusion at the wall. You may be able to find some awning kits at the store.
