We’re in Canada so it must hold up to heat and cold....freezing cold. Any ideas. I don’t want it to look wild, just pleasant please.

I think if you sanded it down slightly, cleaned it and spray painted it (can you take it down and rehang?) with Rustoleum metallic spray paint in an aged bronze or something, that would look simple and cleaned up and hold up to weather.

sand, clean, use a metal prime, allow to dry, paint with a metal paint, seal with a outdoor clear non-yellowing varnish.

What is the style of your home?

Are you a fan of the oil rubbed bronze color?

    Its one of my favorites.

It has an interesting depth of color and just a subtle hint of sparkle. I have used it on many refurbish projects both metal and plastic. I favor the Rustoleum brand for application ease, preformance and color choices. The nozzle on the Universal version is an upgrade from routine type spray can applicators —offering a superior and effortless spray paint application.

Its a great color, an upgrade in my opinion from expected black or white.

You can also consider spray painting old faded plastic planters with the specially marked plastic friendly spray paint to compliment the color you chose for your mailbox, to tie in the same color on the ground- if your space allows!

Spray paint is fun, it can be addicting to refurbish and restore. Best wishes on your project!

More questions......is it under cover of a porch? Would you use the hook like attachments for a newspaper if they were not broken?

  • Jewellmartin Jewellmartin on Jun 18, 2018

I agree with each point Dysco7710 mentioned. And burnished metallics are very nice. You should be able to curl the newspaper prongs back into shape. If you can’t bend it with your hands, you can use any solid circle that fits the prongs. I think a can of tomato paste would be the right size. Or a big metal or pvc pipe. Use a hammer to tap the prongs into place before painting. You are fortunate you still have door delivery. Maybe paint some flowers on the front for the mail carrier to enjoy. Best wishes! ☺️

yes, I know I needed to bend the hooks back....hubby had tied the dog to them and well, the rest is history. Thanks for this advice.

Clean it up by sanding and then using a rust o leum spray paint color of your choice. Then stencil it with something simple.
